What Grade 1 saffron means
Saffron is judged on three measurable qualities — colour, flavour and aroma — plus purity and moisture. We assess our batches against the parameters of ISO 3632, the international saffron standard.

Colouring strength
Crocin gives the deep golden-yellow colour. Higher colouring strength means you need less saffron per dish.
Flavour
Picrocrocin gives saffron its distinctive, slightly bitter, hay-like taste that lifts rice, sweets and sauces.
Aroma
Safranal creates the floral, honey-like aroma. It fades with age and poor storage, which is why sealed packing matters.
Purity and moisture
Stigmas only — no styles, petals or added colour — dried to a low moisture level so threads stay brittle and keep for months.
How our saffron is grown and prepared
Saffron comes from the Crocus sativus flower, which blooms for only a few weeks each autumn. Each flower has just three stigmas and about 150,000 flowers are needed for 1 kg — every step is done with care.
Harvest
Flowers are picked by hand at dawn, before the sun opens them and weakens the stigmas.
Stigma separation
The three red stigmas are separated from each flower the same day, keeping only the red part.
Gentle drying
Threads are dried slowly at low heat to lock in colour, flavour and aroma without scorching.
Grading and sorting
Threads are sorted by colour and length; broken pieces, yellow styles and foreign matter are removed.
Sealed packing
Saffron is vacuum-sealed in foil bags and labelled with origin and batch code for full traceability.
Export dispatch
Packs go into export cartons with the documents your market requires, by air or sea.
The Saffron Guide
Look at the threads
Genuine threads are deep red with a slightly lighter, trumpet-shaped tip. Yellow or white parts mean styles were left in.
Try the water test
Real saffron releases its colour slowly into cool water and the threads stay red. Dyed threads colour the water at once.
Check the aroma
Fresh saffron smells floral and honey-like, never musty, oily or chemical.
Steep before use
Crush a pinch (about 0.1 g, enough for roughly four servings) and steep in warm water or milk for 10–15 minutes.
Store airtight
Keep unopened packs sealed. After opening, transfer to an airtight glass or tin container.
Protect from light and heat
Store in a cool, dry, dark place away from strong smells to protect colour and aroma.
